Peak and off season: When to get the best deal

Tourists flock to this Pacific destination year round for its idyllic climate and long list of attractions. And because the U.S. state is only a five-hour flight from California, Hawaii is a favourite holiday playground for Americans. The busiest travel times in Hawaii are during any school holiday period, especially around Easter, summer school holidays (June through August), and the Christmas and New Year period.

If departing from a Mainland U.S. city like Los Angeles, San Francisco or Seattle, fares tend to be lower due to the extensive number of airlines flying the Hawaii routes. But if travelling from Australia, flights during peak periods can be booked well in advance. To get the best fare, plan and book as far ahead as possible. Shop around for fares too. Look at the low-fare airline options, and consider flying through alternate south Pacific or Asian destinations where a brief stop-over may be available. Each of these strategies may help in lowering the price of the airfare during peak travel times. As always, flying mid-week as opposed to weekend travel, can often generate lower fares.

Getting to and leaving the airport

Honolulu International Airport is located about 10km west of Downtown Honolulu and around 15km west of Waikiki Beach. All the major car rental companies are located at the airport. Their offices can be reached by a free shuttle bus departing every few minutes from outside the Arrivals and Baggage Claim areas. If driving, Honolulu can be accessed by U.S. Interstate H1 or by the slower, city traffic route via the Nimitz Highway.

There is a taxi rank just outside the airport on the Arrivals Level. Private car and hotel transfers can be found inside the Arrivals area with courtesy phones available for use.

For driving directions to and from the airport, refer to the Honolulu Airport map

Honolulu Airport Facilities & Services

Honolulu International Airport offers a small collection of shops, boutiques, restaurants and cafes. The international terminal also features several airline club lounges. The Qantas and Jetstar lounge is located near Gate 26 on Level Three. The Hawaiian Airlines Premier Club is located near Gates 54 and 55 on Level 2. The Air New Zealand Lounge is mid-terminal, near the food court on Level 3.

While most international airports provide free Wi-Fi services, Honolulu does not. Visitors must purchase a 2 hour or 24-hour plan. Wi-Fi service is only available in the gate areas of the departure level.

Passengers should arrive as early as possible for their departing international flight as the small and outdated airport facilities at HNL can cause delays for check-in and security.

Honolulu as transit or stop-over destination

Located on the island of Oahu, Honolulu is both the state capital of Hawaii, and the birthplace and childhood home of U.S. President Barack Obama. Both the city and the island of Oahu are filled with things to see and do, both out in nature, and in and around the flashy shopping and high-rise hotel district of Waikiki.

There’s plenty to fill your day, no matter what your interest. Home to the city’s upscale shopping and dining establishments, Waikiki’s most famous attraction is the beach. One of the world’s most famous beaches, this slice of heaven offers glorious views of Diamond Head and the Honolulu skyline. From boat tours and parasailing to paddle boards, surfing and swimming, a whole day can be spent on this beautiful beach. The high-rise hotels that line the beach are the perfect place to enjoy a meal and a drink.

Oahu is easy to navigate and daily car rentals are an ideal way to make your way around the island. If you’d rather sit back and relax, there are bus tours departing from Waikiki throughout the day. Honolulu and Oahu highlights include Hanauma Bay, Pearl Harbour and the USS Arizona Memorial, Iolani Palace, Diamond Head and Manoa Falls. And for anyone who loves shopping, Honolulu is known for its many outlet malls.
