Peak and off season: When to get the best deal

With its tropical climate, Bangkok is destination worth visiting any time of year. The city does have busy peak periods however, and travelling during these times can generate higher airfares and accommodation prices.

The northern ‘winter’ months from November to February are typically the busiest times to visit Bangkok as the weather is cooler and dryer. Even during this time, there are still plenty of options when looking for cheap flights to Bangkok. Booking in advance, flying mid-week or booking alternate routes via a secondary city can all help reduce the cost of a ticket.

The slower tourist season lasts between May and August. This is also when rains are more likely to fall, but with so much to see and do in Bangkok, visitors shouldn’t let the rain stop them from travelling here. Even during inclimate weather, Bangkok is filled with plenty of indoor activities. Restaurants, museums, the aquarium and of course shopping all are welcome distractions. Best of all, Bangkok airfares are cheaper.

Bangkok as transit or stop-over destination

There are many ways to fill your time in Bangkok. Even if you’re visiting for just a short time, there’s plenty to see and do. And with a multitude of public transport options available, there’s no excuse for not getting out and about. See the sights on a Chao Phraya River boat ride or hire a long-tail river taxi to take you to any of the major piers around the city. For a real Bangkok experience, hail a tuk-tuk for nearby tourist attractions like the Grand Palace and Wat Prakeaw Temple. Another significant temple along the Chao Phraya is Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn). One of the most significant in all of Asia, Wat Arun strikes an impressive pose along the wide river.

There’s no better way to get to know Thailand than through its cuisine. With thousands of authentic restaurants in the city alone, finding that special Thai flavour is easy. Street food too is plentiful and delicious but it’s always best to find one that’s popular with the locals.
