Peak and off season: When to get the best deal

Phuket is one of the ultimate warm weather holiday destinations. With its stretch of endless beaches, family and luxury resorts and many cultural and sightseeing opportunities, Phuket is a place to be enjoyed all year long. When you go can depend on many factors, but knowing when the peak season is, can have an impact on the price you pay for airfares, accommodation and entertainment.

As a popular warm weather leisure destination, Phuket is most busy over school holiday periods, especially during Easter, Christmas and New Year’s. Phuket is also popular during the winter months. Yet finding a cheap fare during these times is still possible. There are a number of low-fare airlines that fly into Phuket, and fares should be compared with what these airlines have to offer. As always, planning ahead may mean you’ll find great Saver fares or ‘early-bird’ specials. Lastly, a great way to keep the cost of airfares down is to travel midweek.

Getting to and leaving the airport

Phuket International Airport is located on the north side of Phuket Island, just off the main north / south road marked 402. Patong Beach is about 40km south, or a 50-minute drive. Hotel shuttle bus or taxi are the most popular methods of transport. When leaving the airport, there is a central pick-up point for taxis and other public transport vehicles.

Phuket as transit or stop-over destination

Phuket is a large island with few public transport options. But that doesn’t mean getting around is difficult. Taxis are readily available and hotels or resorts can reserve private cars for tours or transport. If you’re a confident driver and feel comfortable with taking on the local traffic, many visitors rent cars or motorbikes to get around. Not only is this a cost effective way to see the sights, but it’s a way to create an itinerary around your own schedule.

There’s plenty to see and do on and around this popular Thai island, and getting out to explore is well worth the minimal effort. Start by visiting these sights and attractions.

Phang Nga Bay – marvel at the giant limestone cliffs that rise out of the ocean. One of the most popular spots is James Bond Island, where the alluring natural setting was used for one of the iconic Bond films.

Wat Chalong Temple – This ornate temple is one of Phuket’s most beautifully decorated. It’s often at the centre of local festivals.
